Types of Golf Irons

There are several different types of golf irons to choose from, all of which will help shape the type of game you can play. Knowing the type of iron sets that are out there and the specific type of golf irons that is going to fit your specific style is important to analyze.

Blade Irons

The blade style of iron is known for the skinny  head that the club features. Blades are normally made for the mid to low handicappers because of the lack of forgiveness the club has. A blade iron has a smaller sweet spot, but will hit the ball far more consistently, along with the ability to play more shots.

Cavity Back Irons

A set of irons that will cater to the higher handicap players is the cavity backs. Cavities give players a huge advantage in forgiveness on the course. A larger club head allows there to be a big sweet spot to help high handicappers achieve maximum forgiveness to have more accuracy and the ability to be able to keep the ball on line.

Iron Shafts

Golf iron sets have some of the most customizable shaft options for players and give players a lot of options. For the players with faster swing speed, a steel shaft is usually the way to go. For slower swing speeds, graphite shafts normally favor those type of players.

Multi-material shaft

This type of shaft can have steel and graphite incorporated together in a single shaft. It tends to be composed predominantly of steel with graphite tips. The shaft's steel portion provides a solid shaft that allows you to control balls easier, while the shaft's graphite portion will give the golf ball "extra speed" which will help gaining distance.

Shaft Flex

While the material of the shaft can be different, so can the flex that the shaft is. A shaft traditionally comes in stiff, regular, or ladies flexes, but customization can be done. Making sure you have a proper flex on your clubs will allow for players to obtain the best ball flight and consistent distance numbers.

Comparing Golf Irons Sets

Golf irons sets typically come with 7 or 8 clubs, 6 of which are usually irons and then there will be 1 or 2 wedges (normally a pitching wedge but sometimes a sand wedge) added on to it. Furthermore, long irons can be replaced with hybrids in an iron set for the players that prefer to use hybrids. Fairway woods normally will not replace longer irons in a set, but can be additions.
