Golf Gloves

Every single golf shot begins when your hands grasp the golf club. One of the pro tips you hear all the time is to not grasp the club too tightly. As a result, golf gloves play a very important role, not just in protecting your hand, but how well you grip and hit your golf clubs.

Golf gloves come in an array of sizes, primary material, and even colors. Even if you find yourself playing only a couple of rounds a year you should remember to replace your golf glove at least at the beginning of every golf season.

Why Wear a Golf Glove?

Golf Clubs Get Slick

Even if you don't play in the rain, the natural perspiration of the hand and even the humidity in the air can make the grip slippery.

Protect the Hand

If it has been some time since you've played golf, your hand can develop blisters. This is especially true at the beginning of the season if you have been living the easy life and your hands have become soft.

You are also vulnerable to blisters if your swing style is unusual or if you have an unusually tight grip. The most likely location for blisters is in the palm right where the fingers join the palm, but they can be found anywhere on the palm and even the tips of the fingers.

How to Wear Golf Gloves

Golf gloves should be worn on the non-dominant hand. Therefore, a right-handed golfer should wear a glove on the left hand. Someone who plays golf left-handed should wear a glove on their right.

Any Rules?

There is no rule dictating this and some golfers will wear gloves on both hands especially if it is wet on account of the tendency for the club to slip when "swinging in the rain." The entire hand should fill the glove snugly; however, if someone has shorter fingers a bit of extra material around the fingertips is not a major concern.

Glove Material

Cabretta Leather

Srixon Leather Golf Gloves

A top-of-the-line brand will use a high-grade leather like Cabretta. A leather golf glove will stay soft (important for gripping the club) for several rounds but when it tears or becomes stiff it is time to search for a new one.

Synthetics

Wilson Golf Glove Uses Synthetics

Golf gloves made from a synthetic leather have come a long way and might save you a bit on the price. No matter what kind of glove you buy be sure to get a size that is tight enough so that the club gives you feedback when you strike the ball.

How Many Gloves Should I Own?

Many players recommend three golf gloves. Two regular gloves to alternate and a third specifically for bad weather.

Buy a fourth for your dominant hand to use in the rain. Some brands come in colors but white and black are the most common on the best seller list.
