Golf Bags

When it comes to golf equipment, golf bags & push cart options are often the unsung heroes on the course. A good golf bag is what carries everything from your cell phone to your (ahem) water bottle, to a spare glove and extra golf balls. Oh, by the way, they carry your clubs too!

4 Types of Golf Bags

Stand Bags

Stand Bag from Titleist

A stand bag is specifically designed to be a lighter option for those who like to walk 18 holes but who still want a pocket or three for valuables, accessories like tees, and room for a complete set of clubs.

Sometimes called carry bags, a stand bag is sturdy enough to stand up when the base is placed on the ground since they have two legs that are attached. Since they are lightweight for walking, they do not have a location for everything you might want on account of the fact that a full dozen balls (for example) will add considerably to the weight.

Cart Bags

Cart Bag from Wilson

A cart bag is the perfect size and shape for straps to attach your golf bag to a golf cart. With a medium weight, these usually have lots of storage options with the pockets providing easy access from three sides.

Cart bags always have just the right size base to fit into a cart and many have handles specifically designed to make it easy to lift up into the cart. Name brand golf bags in this quality category will have logos and designs for nearly every golfer.

Tour Bag

Tour bags are what you see carried by caddies on the professional golf tour. Since these caddies are literally carrying everything a pro would need, they need lots of space and a secure location for every club.

A person on a pro tour does not have to worry about prices since they will have a sponsor for their golf bags. As you might guess, these have a price at the top end for golf bags for the rest of us.

Travel Bags

Travel Bag from Bag Boy

If you golf while on vacation, you will want one of these either for the plane or to ship. This is an extra heavy duty bag that will hold your regular bag and all the contents with ease.

When shipping travel bags from location to location, you will really value the extra padding, parachute nylon material, and skid plates to protect the significant investment you have in equipment. In particular when shipping you want your clubs in a secure bag to prevent access in transit. Style is not a major criterion here.

Push Carts

4 Wheeled Cart

Push carts have completely replaced the pull carts of previous decades. When you are traversing the course the last thing you want is for your bag to lose any of the contents or turn over on hills.

These also allow you to fill the pockets with pound and pounds of stuff without worrying about what it will do to your back. Other bonus features include a towel ring and the ever-important cup holder allowing you to play without spilling your favorite beverage.

When should I replace a golf bag?

There are two circumstances that call for new bags.

  1. The old one wears out. When pockets are ripped out or the clubs no longer stay safe and secure, don't wait, buy a new one.

  2. When your needs change. If you are starting to travel with golf in the plans, you need a travel bag. But the same is true if you were walking the course and now are riding. Get the right kind of gear for how you enjoy the game.

Bonus item: Use it as an incentive for better and more golf. Example: break 90 (or 100 or 80) and reward yourself with a new bag. A new bag also makes a great gift anytime!
